Fall J-school commencement

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media held its fall 2012 commencement ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 10 a.m. in Gerrard Hall on UNC campus. Professor Jane Brown delivered the commencement address.
A reception will follow in the school's Carroll Hall lobby.
Brown, who has taught at the school since 1977, retired at the semester's end. During her time at UNC, Brown has been the J-school's James L. Knight Professor and a fellow in the Carolina Population Center.
Her recent projects in China and North Carolina focused on HIV/AIDS prevention. One project assessed the effects of the introduction of television in rural villages in Vietnam.
Brown is the co-editor or co-author of five books on adolescent health and the media, including: "Sexual Teens, Sexual Media: Investigating Media’s Influence on Adolescent Sexuality" (2002), "Media, Sex and the Adolescent" (1992) and "The Media, Social Science and Social Policy for Children" (1985).
She is also author of more than 60 book chapters and articles, and serves on the editorial boards of journals in communication research, sexuality research and adolescent health.
Brown has mentored doctoral and post-doctoral students in journalism and mass communication, public health, education, sociology and psychology.
She has served on the board of Advocates for Youth, the Trojan Sexual Health Advisory Committee; the Institute of Medicine’s Board on Children; Youth and Families; and currently, the research advisory board of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
At UNC, Brown has served as chair of the Faculty Council and director of the Institute for Arts and Humanities' Academic Leadership Program, among many committees and boards. Brown was awarded the University's C. Knox Massey Distinguished Service Award in 2011.
