2010 scholarship and award winners announced

The school rewarded top students and faculty with nearly $200,000 in scholarships and awards at its annual honors convocation on April 26.

Outstanding graduating seniors in each specialization were recognized as were outstanding graduate students.

Assistant professor Heidi Hennink-Kaminski received the 2010 Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching for her guidance of a semester-long project for her students to develop a marketing plan with actionable product and promotional strategies for poweringanation.org, UNC’s News21 project funded by the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education.

Dean Jean Folkerts also cited Hennink-Kaminski’s development of a social marketing course as reason for the prize which carries with it a $10,000 award.

“It is the blend of research and strategy that Dr. Kaminski cultivates that will truly benefit her students,” Folkerts said.

Professor Cathy Packer was honored with the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence Award for her dedication to her students – undergraduate and graduate alike. The award carries a cash prize of $5,000.

Packer’s recognition also came from her organization of UNC’s First Amendment Day, a daylong, campus-wide event that celebrates the freedoms entailed in the amendment.

Doctoral candidate Dean Smith wrote of Packer, “[Her] passion and vision have inspired me personally to take on new challenges. She also challenges UNC to do more, to be more, to serve better.”
