NCSMA, CABJ to host high school journalism workshops; applications open

The N.C. Scholastic Media Association (NCSMA) will host three workshops – the Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media, the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp and the N.C. Scholastic Media Institute – during summer 2012. The Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) will hold its annual one-day workshop for minority high school journalists on Feb. 25. Registration is open for all four.

Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media, July 8-13

The Chuck Stone Program for Diversity in Education and Media invites rising high school seniors with a career interest in journalism to apply for the summer 2012 workshop, held at UNC-Chapel Hill July 8-13. The Chuck Stone Program is targeted toward students of varying diversity, including but not limited to religion, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and gender. Twelve students accepted to the one-week program will learn from classroom study, real-world reporting, newsroom practice and professional mentors. Paid expenses include airfare, meals and lodging. Carolina Sports Journalism Camp, June 27-30

Rising high school juniors and seniors interested in sports and media are encouraged to apply to attend the Carolina Sports Journalism Camp, held at UNC-Chapel Hill July 27-30. The four-day workshop will instruct students on sports play-by-play, sports writing, sports photography and more through classroom study and newsroom practice. Students will experience hands-on learning, take a behind-the-scenes tour of UNC’s sports media facilities and cover a press conference. They will also observe an undergraduate sports writing class taught by the Sports Camp lead instructor Tim Crothers, whose work has appeared in New York Times Magazine and ESPN The Magazine. Priority deadline for applications is April 1. Fee of $500 covers lodging, instruction and meals. North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute, June 18-21

The North Carolina Scholastic Media Institute will be held at UNC-Chapel Hill June 18-21. High school journalism students and advisers are invited to enroll. The intensive four-day workshop teaches innovative and effective ways of communicating through scholastic media. Instructors from across the state and nation offer their expertise in newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine, online news, photojournalism, design and TV news. CABJ journalism workshop for minority high school students, Feb. 25

The Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) and the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will host a one-day journalism workshop for minority high school students on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Carroll Hall on the UNC campus. CABJ is a student collegiate chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and a student organization of the school.

The purpose of the workshop is to give high school students exposure to the multifaceted field and study of journalism and mass communication. CABJ members will work collaboratively with participants throughout the day, and participants will also have the opportunity to meet UNC faculty and area professionals to discuss writing skills and career opportunities.

Applicants should be high school juniors or seniors involved in school publications or media. Students who are generally interested in journalism careers are also encouraged to apply. Registration requires that each applicant submit a writing sample. A $25 registration fee is also required and includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
