UNC Hussman School chapter among three finalists for NABJ student chapter of the year

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced the Carolina Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) as one of three finalists for student chapter of the year.

The chapter won student chapter of the year in 2001, 2002 and 2007 — and was a finalist for the award in 2005, 2012 and 2013.

Northwestern University and the University of North Texas are the two other finalists for 2015.

Averi Harper, an alumna and former CABJ member, was one of two 2014 NABJ student journalists of the year.

Elise McGlothian, the current CABJ president, serves as a UNC J-school Ambassador. The ambassador team was created in 2012 to help future, current and former students navigate and succeed through the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media.

Assistant professor Trevy McDonald, who co-advises CABJ with professor Jan Yopp, will accompany nine UNC J-school students, including a May graduate, to the NABJ annual convention and career fair Aug. 5 to Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The student chapter of the year award will be presented during the convention, the nation’s largest gathering of minority journalists.
