2012 scholarship and award winners announced

The UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media presented top students, faculty and staff members with more than 100 scholarships and awards totaling more than $315,000 at its annual honors ceremony on April 23.

Assistant professor Terence Oliver, who teaches courses in design, infographics and motion graphics, received the 2012 Edward Vick Prize for Innovation in Teaching. The award carries a $10,000 prize.

Dean Susan King cited Oliver's work with students to develop the school's first iPad apps, which featured student-produced magazines, as among the reasons for his recognition.

Queenie Byars, an assistant professor who teaches courses in public relations and oversees the school's diversity initiatives, was awarded the David Brinkley Teaching Excellence award which comes with a cash prize of $1,000. 

Professor Ruth Walden, who retires after the spring 2012 semester, received the Dean’s Award For Excellence In Teaching, Research and Service.

David Alexander, the J-school's director of information and technology services, received the Staff Excellence Award. Assistant director of executive education and distance education Rachel Lillis was recognized with the Star Heel Award.

Outstanding graduating seniors in each specialization were recognized as were outstanding graduate students.
